Prom: A Night in Paris

I had a new experience this past week; I went to prom. And surprisingly with a date. Of course, there was a lot of pre-prom teen drama, but when the actual day came, prom was well worth the hormonal preamble. (I will say this for prom, it surely shows peoples’ true colors.) My amazing sister made me a gorgeous prom dress and my date a bow tie in 12 hours. And we looked top. I think we had a little too much fun taking photos. Let me just say, photo bombed for the win. (Shout out to Joanna for being a fabulous photographer and putting up with our nonsense.)

With my brother and his date we went to an Asian restaurant downtown and I got some duck. Later we walked along the river and shouted, “I ate you!” at every duck we saw. We also noted the amount of mainstream ducks there were in the Rock River… I think that time downtown was perhaps the highlight of my evening.

And then for the actual prom. Amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun at a dance before. The DJ played a lot of songs that I first heard in Jamaica, so that brought back good memories, as well as some new classics. Cuz’ we be on our suit and tie while thrift shopping. What, what?

Even the car ride home was a party — although we were all about to fall asleep.

Definitely worth going. So many memories; so many goodtimes.

WinterJam 2013

The beginning of a wonderful week for me started with WinterJam Extravaganza 2013!

IMG_0342For those of you who don’t know, WinterJam is an annual Christian concert. This year, a total of twenty three people from my youth group went and joined ten thousand people at the Sears Centre in Chicago. I think I can speak for everyone when I say it was a blast! We all sang until our throats were sore, clapped until our hands hurt, jumped until our legs were about to collapse, but most importantly, praised God until it brought tears to our eyes.

Something started there. IMG_0351During this concert, God moved. When the time came, almost everyone in my youth group stood and rededicated their lives to Christ.

On the car ride home, my van leader asked us kids why we stood. That sparked a conversation and then another and another. That car ride was the best ride of my life. Prayer, praise, confessions, expectations, reality, hurts, concerns were all poured out.

We kids were serious about our rededication. Really serious. God is real. He’s not dead. He’s living on the inside roaring like a lion! He is surely alive!

But life isn’t always a “ride”. There’s something big about to happen. We all feel it. Some struggle or battle. Life isn’t always a mountain top experience. There are valleys too. But God will see us through.

All us kids that stood are keeping in contact with each other. We decided we wanted to start the day out with a song of praise. Over facebook, we are sharing worship songs, bible verses, and just encouraging each other everyday to serve God and surrender to his perfect will.

There’s one song that has a special meaning for all of us. Tobymac sang it, and we sang it on the ride home. Then in church the next day it was sung for worship. And even in other places like my friends sign language class the song was played. I’d like to share it with you: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DXDGE_lRI0E

Yeah, mon! JAMAICA

This past June, my grandparents took me, my brother and my two cousins on our 7th annual vacation. Previously, we staid in the states traveling as far as Florida (more posts to follow); however, last summer we went to Jamaica. It was the first time I had gone out of the country, so it was a new and exciting experience. In Jamaica, we went to an all-exclusive resort on the beach. It was an amazing time and quite educational on many levels… I met many people and danced most every night away at the teen club.  I loved the ocean and the really hot weather, and I truly enjoyed reading The Hobbit in a hammock with white waves and sand at my feet.
