Becoming Hipster and Starting Summer

Well, there really isn’t one event that turns one into a hipster, but this event is pretty close.  My last day of school was on Friday (hurray), and also on that day, I went to The Union in Naperville to see The Vespers in concert! You’ve probably never heard of The Vespers, but they’re one of my favorite bands. The joint was a small old church building refurbished into “a venue for social change”. The concert had a house concert feel with only about a hundred people there. Oh, and did I mention that there was a coffee shop in the back? Yeah, like I said, it was totally a hipster shindig. The Vespers were amazing, of course. I can’t wait until they’re in the neighborhood again.

And, we got to meet three of the band members after the concert! I definitely felt “in”.  One of The Vespers even invited us to chill out with them later. So cool. We even got labeled as homeschoolers, but it’s okay because so was the band.

Throw in some great friends, dip cones, and swingdancing and it was pretty much perfection. I don’t think I could think of a better way to start my summer!

{sidenote: I looked up the word “hipster” in the urban dictionary. It’s worth reading.}

Red: Risk, Energy, Determination

Red is my favorite color. It’s just “my” color. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that I own only red lipstick, red nail polish — for a while — only red dresses, and red pants. I’ve heard many things about red: like a person is likely to look at you five seconds longer if you’re in red, red speaks adventure and vigor, etc. And so today, I looked up what the experts say about the color red. Surprisingly, it’s what the public believes: red shouts risk, energy, and determination. No wonder this is my favorite color. And it seems like the perfect color for summer too!

Yes! Summer is almost here. I have one week left of school, and I already feel as though I am free (probably due to the great 85 degree weather, the amount of partying I’ve been doing and being done with geometry). Several months ago, while skyping a friend, we decided to make a summer list, for summer is not a time to be wasted. Summer is a time for risk, energy and determination. So now with summer arriving, we started to check some things off our list — and to have a wonderful time!

Spring Formal

And another occasion to get classy: Hallstrom’s spring formal. Apparently the theme was “A Night of Enchantment” — an intriguing theme choice, but who am I to judge this dance? I merely noticed how much of a homeschool event this was. Thursday night, ends at 10:30pm,  sibling photo shoots beforehand, big deal about seniors, songs from who knows how long ago, about twenty parents sniping from all corners — you get the picture. Actually, speaking of parents, mine decided it would be funny to show up. Yeah… That was so funny. But the people were great. We did our best to party like it was a Friday night.

The Imaginary Invalid

This weekend I was in my seventh Hallstrom (homeschool co-up here in Rockford) play. We put on The Imaginary Invalid by Moliere. And I once again had an amazing time playing on stage.

But I guess I really want to say how thankful I am for all my drama buddies and just Hallstrom. I mean, Hallstrom has plenty of quirks, but I’m so glad that I became a part of its drama group. I’ve meet so many great people and learned so much. I can’t believe that I almost didn’t tryout for my first play there. I remember being so nervous that I told my mom I didn’t want to tryout. Everyone seemed to know each other and the whole atmosphere was so foreign and uncomfortable and different. But I did tryout; and my life is so very much the better for it. So here’s to Hallstrom and all the folks it brought together.

Prom: A Night in Paris

I had a new experience this past week; I went to prom. And surprisingly with a date. Of course, there was a lot of pre-prom teen drama, but when the actual day came, prom was well worth the hormonal preamble. (I will say this for prom, it surely shows peoples’ true colors.) My amazing sister made me a gorgeous prom dress and my date a bow tie in 12 hours. And we looked top. I think we had a little too much fun taking photos. Let me just say, photo bombed for the win. (Shout out to Joanna for being a fabulous photographer and putting up with our nonsense.)

With my brother and his date we went to an Asian restaurant downtown and I got some duck. Later we walked along the river and shouted, “I ate you!” at every duck we saw. We also noted the amount of mainstream ducks there were in the Rock River… I think that time downtown was perhaps the highlight of my evening.

And then for the actual prom. Amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun at a dance before. The DJ played a lot of songs that I first heard in Jamaica, so that brought back good memories, as well as some new classics. Cuz’ we be on our suit and tie while thrift shopping. What, what?

Even the car ride home was a party — although we were all about to fall asleep.

Definitely worth going. So many memories; so many goodtimes.
