My Top 20 Moments of 2013

So facebook has a feature, “my year in review”, with what it thinks are my top moments of the past year. It got several things correct. But there are some things the number of likes and comments can’t measure. So here is what I hold as the top 20 moments and memories (in order of appearance) of 2013.

1. WinterJam. WinterJam was one of the few times when I felt connected with God along with the other believers around me. Connection like that is supernatural.

They surprised me with a birthday brownie, flowers, a mug, and of course, coffee!

2 .My Birthday. I remember feeling completely loved and cared for on that day. It was a Thursday, which meant there was swing dancing. Before that, I met my friends at Starbucks and they surprised me with flowers, coffee and a brownie with a candle in it.

3. Ascension Convention. The conference itself wasn’t anything much, but again, as a youth group, we all connected. We supported each other. Frankly, as a church, we acted like a church.

20130420_JKW_00158-494. Prom. Yeah, whatever, it’s cliché, but I had a great time with this guy.

Just being in character

5. The Imaginary Invalid. This spring play made me exceedingly thankful for the friends I have. I also played probably my favorite role: Leah, the quick-witted, snarky maid.

minifeatureimage6. Fashion show. Thanks to my sis, I got to be back stage during one of her fashion shows at her college. I did her models’ hair and got to meet some of her friends.

The Vespers

The Vespers

7. The Vespers concert. This was the beginning of summer for me. Joanna, Hudson and I drove an hour and some to see The Vespers, now one of my favorite bands.

IMG_01348. My yard working job. This, I didn’t really enjoy that much, but I’m so glad for the opportunity I had to work and work hard with my bare hands. I was glad for the money and appreciative for the reminder of why I want to go to college.

9. Dancing in Beloit. This is one of my favorite things about summer. Each year, the family and then whatever friends we can drag along, go dancing at Harry’s Place, a gazebo on the river in downtown Beloit.

10. Doing music with Joey. Joey and I have been writing and working on some songs over the year, and it’s been a ton of fun and I’ve enjoyed getting the experience.

My favorite activity that we did :)

11. Vacation with the fam. I got to do so many things I had never done before on this vacation. I thoroughly enjoyed all the traveling and adventures. But really what makes this vacation stand out is all the time I got to think. Since we traveled all over the place, I had hours and hours just to sit and think about some things that I really needed to think about and figure out. I remember talking to God and hearing him answer. I asked him to make himself clear and a car hit us. Yep, having nothing to do is amazing. (read a related post)

1064244_10151414464597470_444641145_o12. Missions Week. My church did a missions week where we hosted a team from Ohio, had a VBS, and did community service all day long. So great. I’ve never felt so useful in all my life. The best part was painting a house. I got to paint the steeples with my second papa. The bomb.

IMG_060913. Fourth of July. This night was mostly just classic. It wasn’t really the fourth, but it was my neighborhood’s firework show. So much fun. So many fireworks.

My new friend, Lanie.

14. Escape to the Lake. This was a life changer. Escape to the Lake was a music conference over the Fourth of July weekend. I met a lot of great people and got to know some of the band people too (including The Vespers)! But the most important part was making friends with a little girl, Lanie. I thought I could never talk with kids, much less enjoy it. Thanks, girl, for proving me wrong.

15. Doctor Who. Yes, this was an important part of my year. The Doctor taught me to see people the way they are: fantastic. All people are amazing whether they know it or not. I love discovering what different people are all about now. I see people in a whole new way.

1186091_10201964113134815_401889709_n16. Classy Picnic. Life is what you make of it. And I decided to make it awesome. So I had a classy picnic with classic peeps.

17. USO Swing dance. I met the girl (who would become a close friend)I would travel to Hawaii with, played games, dressed up 1940’s style and got to dance the night away to a live band. That’s what I call a good weekend.

Untitled-118. Hanging with my bestie and making some new friends. Abby became my friend when I was possibly in my most horrible stage ever. I looked awkward, talked awkwardly, acted awkward, and despite all that, I thought I knew almost everything. I’m afraid I didn’t have much grace. But Abs was always there. I thank her for smoothing over some of my rough spots. And she still pushes through all the rest of my weirdness and is one of my best friends to this day. I love hanging with her. I also got to know several other people this year, people that I’ve known, but recently discovered how incredible or funny or strange or sweet they are. People are just cool.

IMG_044419. Hawaii. I’ve been working on a post for Hawaii, and it’s been taking a long time because so much happened. So many little moments that I would have missed if I hadn’t had been looking. Those little things are really part of me now. I enjoyed playing with kids, had a ball in the kitchen and was reminded what life was all about. Oh, and gained two sisters.

DSC0899820. Pine Havens Inn Trouble. This fall play was actually really stressful, but I’m so glad I did it.  I will very easily forget what the play was about or what my lines were, but I will never forget hiding away in forgotten corners, derping around backstage, and making ridiculous jokes with these dorks.

So there’s that, 2013. I’ve changed so much for the better. I attribute it all to the amazing people God has put in my life and all the tough things He put in my way. Thank you for the trials, pain, laughs, friends, good times and encouragement.

Deadly Ever After

One of my friends Victoria recently had a birthday. To celebrate, she invited the drama group from Hallstrom over for a “play party”. Each person was given a character to be and a set of clues and information. We all arrived dress in costume and played out our roles and gathered information to figure out who murdered Sharizad. I played Rapunzel. After we solved the murder and became ourselves again, we played Mafia, “I’ve Never” and Truth or Dare. And made random videos… And ate a lot… These people are the bomb.

USO Swing Dance

Two weekends ago was full of fun. It started off with a girl I’d never met spending the night at my house. Why? Well, I’m going to Hawaii in 12 days now, and I’ll be traveling with this girl, Kara, to visit another one of my friends, Joanna. I know, confusing and random. But aren’t all the best things? Anyway, Kara and I hit it off from the start. I love it when that happens. We three will have quite the time!

IMG_0027ESaturday was very eventful. The main event was a USO swing dance at Memorial Hall, but much had to get done before that. 9am Kara and I drove to WalMart to pick up the necessities of breakfast: coffee and bacon. 9:45am we met up with the USO group for a brunch. Homemade espressos were made and consumed. They were fabulous. 11:30am we all went thrift shopping to find navy blue pants to complete an outfit for the evening dance. We also had to get some milk so we got regular as well as chocolate; we wouldn’t want to be racist. 1:15pm we returned home and made lunch. 1:30pm I finally got to play the much talked about game, Bang! 2:45pm lunch was served. 3:30pm everyone dressed up 1940’s style, and we took a few hurried photos. 4:30pm more Bang! 6:00pm the big group went to pick up Joanna at the bus stop since she was just coming back from a trip. Kara and I had brought her dress, shoes, make-up, curling iron and hat. So when she arrived, we rushed into the community bathroom to get her ready for the dance.

7:15pm we were off and arrived just 30mins after the doors opened and just in time for the music. Because the party doesn’t start until we walk in.

Let me just say, I love Memorial Hall. It’s beautiful. And having everyone dressed in vintage attire and with retro hairstyles was fabulous. The dance floor was packed. And I mean packed. I haven’t been so tightly surrounded since I was riding the Beijing subways. And that’s saying a lot. After the first two dances, I stopped apologizing for stepping on people’s shoes. My black suede dancing shoes were very scuffed by the end of the night. But, you know, I really didn’t mind the crowds. It was something new. And yet so classic a feeling as well. The people, the building, and the live band really made the whole experience thrilling.

At one point, the band played a polka. Bad idea with the number of couples. Let’s just say I barely made it out alive. And to conclude, here are some words of wisdom: avoid dancing closely to girls with tall skinny heels. It hurts when they step on you.

Classy Picnic

One of the other things on my past summer list was “have a classy picnic.” So I did. I had found a picnic basket at a garage sale and with some help made plans. The menu consisted of sparkling grape and apple juice, BLT’s, chips and hummus, fruit salad, and pumpkin bars. The perfect atmosphere was completed with classic tunes, a ukulele, old trunks, blanket, vintage styled clothes, birds flying high, and a lovely pond. The outcome = perfection in a day.

Devil’s Lake

A few weeks ago, I went back to Devil’s Lake. I love it there. It’s one of my favorite places in the Midwest. I guess I always find the two 550ft cliffs and beautiful lake a shock after the two hour drive of seeing nothing but corn. And flat land. And more corn. Devil’s Lake is a break from monotony.

There are several paths that go up and around or just around the lake, but that’s not the best way to go. I prefer to go straight up. Instead of hiking along the paths, I go climbing over the boulders.  It’s always a bit challenging especially because I’m slightly lacking in height. But it’s always my favorite part. Something about going off the trail and using every appendage and all parts of your body to get somewhere and accomplish something is very satisfying.

(Thanks to Joanna Kay and James for some of the photos!)
